Our mission at SwingCville is to share our love of vintage dance and to make it as accessible as possible. One way we do that is by running SwingCville as a not-for-profit, keeping our admission costs low, and relying on our amazing volunteers. Volunteering is a great way to be more involved with SwingCville, build stronger friendships with other dancers, and help keep the dream alive. We have positions available for a wide range of commitment levels, be it week-by-week or longer term. Below you can find descriptions of our weekly volunteer positions as well as more involved “officer” positions we are looking to fill.
Weekly Volunteer Positions
6:30-7:45 – Setup + Door: This person is responsible for showing up to the Greek Orthodox church early to help move chairs, setup DJ equipment, put out the SwingCville library, and other setup tasks. At 7pm they will switch to the door to begin taking payment and signing up dancers. This position is ideal for newer dancers who aren’t planning to take the intermediate lesson series.
7:45-9:00pm – Door: This person is responsible for taking payment and signing in dancers during the beginner lesson series and the beginner drop-in lesson. This position is ideal for more experienced dancers who are less interested in taking lower level classes.
9:00-10:00pm – Door: This person is responsible for taking payment and signing in dancers during the first hour of the dance. Whoever is filling this position is more than welcome to dance, but must keep an eye on the door and assist anyone who shows up.
Crash Course and C’ville Savoy
Door Volunteer: We need one door volunteer each night we host a Crash Course of C’ville Savoy. These volunteers are responsible for taking payment and signing in dancers. Volunteers may participate in the lesson/dance while there is no one to sign-in.
All of our teaching positions are filled on a volunteer basis. If you have no experience teaching but would like to give it a try, come chat with us and we can see about getting you in touch with an experienced teacher. New teachers can begin with the 8:30 drop-in lesson and move on to lesson series after they have more experience teaching and dancing.
Vacant “Officer” Positions
We are looking for an enthusiastic writer to help write our once-a-month swing newsletter! This officer is responsible for reaching out to officers and dancers from Charlottesville and other scenes to gather newsworthy events and announcements for inclusion in the newsletter, writing the copy for the newsletter, and mailing the newsletter through our online mailing list.
Social Event Coordinator
We are looking for a socially-minded volunteer with strong organization skills to help organize SwingCville social events. Such events could include movie nights, hiking trips, wine tastings, vintage thrift shopping, etc. Our hope is for such a volunteer to help deepen the social connections that make involvement with SwingCville such a joy!
