Instead of hosting a Savoy this month, we’ve decided to focus on keeping all this good community momentum going… Nearly all the folks who were at our planning potluck earlier this month expressed interest in volunteering. GO YOU! This event will get everyone prepped to volunteer as greeter, floor captain, or teacher! Stick around afterward for some Christian’s pizza (free, care of Swing Cville) and a little informal dancing.
3:00-4:00pm New Volunteer Training with Jim H & Dana
4:00-6:00pm New Teacher Training with Peter & Ariel
6:00-7:00pm Eat Pizza and DANCE
-Free and open to anyone who loves our Swing Cville community!
-We really encourage everyone to come for the full session even if you are just curious about what teaching is like…maybe in a few months you’ll be like “Hey now that I’ve officially become an awesome/amazing dancer, I’m just really dying to share all my skillz!”
-Attending does not mean you will be automatically signed up for shifts or anything, so come on out even if you aren’t sure about the time commitment.
-Volunteering has major perks, which we sometimes forget to mention! Taking one shift on Wednesday gets you into the dance FO FREE 🙂

This month, our teachers are bringing *Lindy Focus* back to Charlottesville! We had an epic turnout at Focus this year, and we all learned a lot. Here’s a run-down of this months classes:
1/4 – Jim McGuire: Lead/follow mechanics with a new partner connection. We’ll be playing with 4, 6 and 8-count rhythms.
1/11 – Ariel Kahrl: Innovating Jazz Variations 1, how to change basic footwork and rhythm patterns to add musicality to your solo dancing!
1/18 – Ariel Kahrl: Innovating Jazz Variations 2, some charleston variations (and a sequence!) using the same principles as the week 1. You should know the basic charleston for this one.
1/21 – Katie Dillon – TBA
We’ve decided that these lessons will be a la carte! If you’ve already paid for the lesson series at 7:45, great, you’re in! If you want to just take this lessons series one week at a time, great, you can do that! It will be $5 per lesson, which will also get you into the dance. Email email@example.com
Saturday, February 25th, Ruth and Mike are coming to Charlottesville to offer not one, but *two* workshops. The first, noon to 3pm is an instructor workshop aimed at honing your teaching. The second workshop (3:30-5pm) focuses on Lindy Hop turns and self-expression.
Instructor Training Workshop (12pm – 3pm)
Ruth and Mike will help you develop you own teaching style and inspire you with tips that have made them popular with students around the world. It’s not just what you do, it’s the way that you do it… Topics may cover teaching a fantastic beginner class, how to teach to follows, balancing talking and moving time in class, how to keep classes interesting, and more!
Lindy Hop Workshop (3:30pm-5:30pm)
This class will sharpen your turn technique and expand your turn repertoire. We’ll explore a variety of shiny turn patterns from the smooth and gradual to the quick and snappy. Both leads and follows will learn how to actively dance through turns to create more possibilities.
Freedom of Expression
Personal expression is a strong motivating force in jazz music and dance. It is one of the main reasons that we love Lindy Hop. We will help you unlock your potential to add your unique voice to your dancing.
Each workshop is $30 separately and includes admission to that night’s C’ville Savoy! Sign up for both workshops together for $50.
Ruth and Mike love teaching dance. They work exceptionally well as a teaching partnership and are internationally renowned for their dynamic energy, precise explanations, entertainment value, and ability to make very detailed dance technique fun to learn. They are among the most sought-after instructors in the Blues dance world, and they have a growing reputation in the Lindy Hop scene.
They both love carrot juice, smoky Scotch whisky, and philosophical discussions but differ on the use of the oxford comma. They have been known to fishtail in grocery stores and swing out in the aisles of moving trains. Students rave about their dynamic energy, precise explanations, entertainment value, and ability to make very detailed dance technique fun to learn.

This month Stephen Johnson is going to teach a three-week series on ‘The Jive’ routine from 7:45pm-8:30pm in our beginner series. No experience is necessary, but it is definitely helpful to watch a video or two of the routine. Here’s a video of the full routine:

This month, we are having a grab bag lesson series! Our instructors are going to be teaching lessons with a different theme (of their choice) every week. This give us a great opportunity to cover some topics we might not get to in our regular lesson series. We will run this month-long series like all other series – you have to come to all of them!
Here are the description of the classses:
Week 1: Drills & Frills – Brian Paljug
Description: How do we practice our partner dancing when we don’t have a partner? In this one-shot lesson, Brian P. will introduce a number of drills and exercises from top dance teachers to improve your dancing fundamentals: pulse, posture, footwork, agility, endurance, momentum, and other buzzwords! This is an ALL LEVELS class in the best sense — the only prerequisite is basic footwork (lindy & charleston), but EVERYONE will be challenged!
Prereqs: Must know 8-count and charleston footwork
Week 2: Partner connection – Jim McGuire
In week 2 we’re going to spend a lesson improving the flow of our dancing. This should allow for a more graceful and relaxed dance, even at higher tempos. We’ll be paying special attention to the follow’s role in the partnership and looking at how to improve flow by working on direction, momentum and movement through a simple progression of moves.
Prereqs: Participants will need to know how to swing out to participate in the class.
Week 3: The Structure of Swing (Music) – Brian Richards
What is swing music? How do we understand what goes in to the music we are listening to? Join us as we explore the different types of music that make up “swing” and explore how the structure and style of the music can influence the dance!
Week 4: Musicality – Stephen Johnson and Katie Dillon
In the musicality class with Stephen and Katie will explore useful footwork and timing variations. Exercises will familiarize students with moving in and out of traditional footwork patterns. This lesson builds off of Brian’s preceding musicality class.
Every time a 5th Wednesday rolls around, we use that opportunity to bring you a special kind of lesson! The Swing Clinic gives you a chance for one-on-one feedback from the instructors here at SwingCville. We can offer personalized instruction to help improve your Swing Outs, partner connection, Charleston, or anything else you’re hoping to improve in your dancing.
In order to have the right number of instructors and the proper balance between leads and follows, we do require that all Swing Clinic participants pre-register for the event. Registration is only $5 but we do ask that, if you register, please be sure to attend that day so we can have both leads and follows for folks to practice with.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Starting in the month of August SwingCville will no longer be having lessons at the Front Porch, we are moving to the Municipal Arts Center on 5th Street! Make sure to remind your friends to come to the MAC next week (8/3/16)!!
See you there!
