SwingCville seeks to cultivate a positive, open, respectful, and supportive community. All attendees, instructors, staff, contracted vendors, and volunteers of SwingCville events are expected to abide by the following Code of Conduct to ensure a safe, respectful space for everyone.
Respect at the Dance
Dancing involves going into another’s personal space, and communicating through verbal and nonverbal cues. Please pay attention to these cues. Sometimes as dancers we forget that others have different boundaries on and off the dance floor. Please remember that not all communication is verbal. Pay attention, and most importantly, respect each other’s different boundaries. Asking for verbalized consent is always recommended. If you feel like your boundaries are being ignored or you are uncomfortable in any way, please contact a member of the SwingCville staff.
It is always appropriate to say “no” to a dance for any reason. If you are turned down from a dance, respect that decision and do not harass the person. If at any point in a dance you feel unsafe, or want the dance to stop, it is appropriate to end the dance.
SwingCville is not a pick-up joint. We do not represent a large group of people for you to make advances on. Be respectful. People are here to dance and have a good time.
Safety on the Dance Floor
SwingCville does not permit aerials, jumps, low dips, trust-falls, or other moves that could potentially hurt someone if done improperly. These moves are only appropriate if you are in a performance, competition, or jam circle with your regular partner with whom you have practiced such moves. Be aware of the skill level of your partner and dance in a fun and challenging, but still safe appropriate manner. Watch out for people around you and try not to run into each other.
Respect the learning environment, instructors, and fellow students. Please listen while instructors are talking and refrain from engaging in side conversations. While lessons are occurring, do not teach “side lessons.” Please be on time to class. Anyone more than 10 minutes late will not be admitted.
While you may want to share your knowledge with other dancers, please do not provide unsolicited advice to anyone on their dancing (or anything else for that matter). If your advice is wanted, it will be asked for. That being said, do not hesitate to ask others for advice at an appropriate time if you value their honest opinion. This is a safe learning environment.
If at any point during class or the social dance a move occurs that causes pain, to either dancer, immediately stop the dance and inform your partner. Please inform a member of the SwingCville staff of any unsafe dance practices occurring.
Alcohol & Tobacco
Alcohol and tobacco are not permitted at SwingCville dances or events unless explicitly allowed by SwingCville. SwingCville abides by all federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
SwingCville does not tolerate any form of harassment. Harassment includes, but is not limited to, offensive verbal comments (related to biological sex, gender orientation, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, OR religion), sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, unwanted photography or recording, sustained disruption of workshops or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.
If you have any questions, please speak with a staff member or Contact Us.

Anyone failing to abide by the Code of Conduct will be subject to consequences determined by the SwingCville staff, including, but not limited to warnings, removal from the event, or permanent banning from SwingCville events.
Handling Code of Conduct Breaches –
Protocol for Staff
Immediate Response and Notification
SwingCville takes all reports of a breach of the Code of Conduct seriously. The immediate responsibility of the staff is to ensure the safety of all relevant parties. As soon as a report is made, bring it to the attention of the acting floor captain (if at an event), the manager, and/or the owner (Lily Mahon).
In order to be fair and just to both parties in a breach, we will do our best to gather as much information as possible about the incident. This means getting the perspectives of the reporter, the accused, and witnesses if there are any, while still respecting the confidentiality and wishes of the reporter.
Resolution of the breach will be handled on a case-by-case basis. If the breach demands immediate resolution, such as in the case of dangerous activity on the dance floor, the staff will act accordingly. Otherwise, the floor captain, manager, and owner will resolve the issue. This will involve a private conversation among the accused, staff, and the reporter (if willing) to discuss the incident, relevant perspectives, and consequences. SwingCville will always have at least two staff present, one male and one female when possible. At no point during this conversation will SwingCville staff breach the confidentiality of the reporter, unless the reporter gives explicit permission.
In situations where there has been a substantiated breach, SwingCville reserves the right to determine and apply consequences after careful deliberation. Consequences can include, but are not limited to a warning, removal from an event, or permanent banning from all SwingCville events. In cases of removal or banning, no refunds will be issued.
The floor captain, manager, and owner have the authority to remove someone from an event if they deem it necessary. This action should be taken in consultation with at least one other of the floor captain, manager, and owner unless the breach requires immediate removal for safety reasons. Permanent banning from SwingCville requires the agreement of two out of three of the following: the manager, the owner, and a majority of officers present (minimum of four).
